Suspended Animation: (noun) The temporary cessation of most vital functions without death, as in a dormant seed or a hibernating animal.

As you are waiting for your baby, does it feel like you are in a constant state of suspended animation? “How can I plan anything? A vacation, a job change, a move, the next stage of my life?”

When I’ve been in this state of suspended animation, I describe it as feeling as if I am frozen in the middle of a clear water lake, arms and legs outstretched, wanting to run and scream, and yet nothing moves. I can see everything that I want around me, and yet I can’t get there. Endless winter.

If you find yourself in this suspended animation because of fertility, often the first response is to fight against the suspension. To push into action. Research. Look for a new doctor, nutritionist, energy healer, etc. Rail against God. Push even harder. Strive even more. Feed the emotions that scream, “This ISN’T FAIR!”

Of course you do. Because it’s a helpless state.

And yet, even as you are pushing against, your whole system is letting you know that this isn’t what it wants.

So instead, when you are in this state, here’s what I want you to remember: Even when winter has its icy grip all around you, important work is being done inside. Without winter, without the resting phase, organisms burn out.

Spring always returns.

How do you make it through a suspended animation phase to that metaphorical spring? By choosing practices that match the phase: BEING practices. Practices that fuel your body.

Time in nature. Relaxation practice. Meditation. Journaling. Long walks. Being in the present moment. Appreciating your body. Playing. Being creative. Honoring and acknowledging that part within you that craves action and movement. Letting that part know that time is coming. Then coming back to a BEING practice.

If you take this approach instead of pushing against the stagnation, you’ll become aware of the signs telling you the suspended animation state is ending, you’ll become aware of the inspired actions that are just right for you in this moment. You’ll know when it’s time to take the next step.

Those signs, like the first hints of green shoots working their way out of the ground, are easy to miss if you are perpetually looking 10 steps ahead and needing action and movement.

Take the time to be — even when it feels helpless and painful — and know that your spring, your baby, is on its way.
